We are currently experiencing a brand-new era of WWE. Following last month’s epic two-night event known as Wrestlemania XL and the recent WWE Draft, the Paul “Triple H” Levesque era of the long-running wrestling promotion is in full swing.
Now, with the rosters adequately shaken up and a ton of potential for fresh, exciting rivalries and partnerships, the eyes of the WWE Universe will all be on the LDLC Arena in Lyons, France for WWE Backlash on May 4, 2024.
With their first show of the “new year” or “new season,” the company is continuing their promise to make their shows more global than ever before. The Raw and Smackdown rosters have already competed on premium live events in Australia, Canada, India, Puerto Rico, and the United Kingdom over the past year. And after coming off the highs of the 40th anniversary of the Showcase of the Immortals in Philadelphia, WWE will broadcast live from the home country of the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Palace of Versailles for the first time ever.
Here’s the full card for WWE Backlash 2024 (at the time of this writing):
Kevin Owens and Randy Orton vs. The Bloodline (Solo Sikoa and Tame Tonga)
WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship Match: Damage CTRL (ASUKA and Kairi Sane) vs. Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill
WWE Women’s Championship Triple Threat Match: Bayley (c) vs. Naomi vs. Tiffany Stratton
WWE World Championship Match: Damian Priest (c) vs. Jey Uso
Undisputed WWE Championship Match: Cody Rhodes (c) vs. AJ Styles
WWE is taking 'un voyage' to France for WWE Backlash 2024, also being called Backlash France, because this year's iteration of the wrestling event is also the first WWE pay-per-view to take place in France.
Saturday, May 4 will see some of the biggest Raw and Smackdown wrestlers meet up in the ring to continue many of WrestleMania's storylines, with five matches contesting several championship titles.
Backlash France is the first WWE PPV event to take place in the country, and the first time Backlash has been staged outside of North America. The 19th edition of Backlash will showcase some of the key stars and storylines following on from WrestleMania.
Cody Rhodes will be the main attraction in Lyon, as he defeated Roman Reigns at the star-studded event earlier this month. He will take on AJ Styles for the Undisputed WWE Championship title, with plenty more matches to savour.
On Saturday, May 4, WWE is heading to Lyon-Decines, France for Backlash 2024. This will be the first premium live event ever to be held in France, so this is significant. Also, it won't be the last international show held in the coming months.
Backlash will see Rhodes defend against AJ Styles, who won a tournament on SmackDown to become the No. 1 contender. As for Priest, he will defend the World Heavyweight Championship against Jey Uso, who defeated McIntyre, Ricochet, and Bronson Reed in a fatal-four-way No. 1 contender's match.
Plus there are other matches like WWE Women's champion Bayley taking on Naomi and Tiffany Stratton, Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill challenging the Kabuki Warriors (Asuka and Kairi Sane) for the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships, and Randy Orton and Kevin Owens taking on Solo Sikoa and Tama Tonga.
Heading into Backlash, WWE is entering the “American Nightmare Era.” After finishing his story at WrestleMania 40, Cody Rhodes is now the Undisputed WWE Champion. A different era means a new crop of challengers for Rhodes. First up is AJ Styles, a former two-time WWE champion. Rhodes must bring his A-game if he wants to walk out of France as champion.
For the main event, Undisputed WWE Universal champion Cody Rhodes is set to defend the belt against AJ Styles, just after Rhodes won the title away from Roman Reigns at Wrestlemania in Philadelphia last month.
In the main event, Cody Rhodes will make the first televised defense of the undisputed WWE championship he won from Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40. Standing across from Rhodes will be multi-time former champion AJ Styles. Rhodes and Styles have traveled many of the same roads throughout their careers but have never faced each other in singles or tag competition.
Plus, Damian Priest looks to begin his run as world heavyweight champion against Jey Uso after the challenger won a No. 1 contender's match. Then, there are a pair of women's titles at stake. Newly crowned WWE women's champion Bayley will face Tiffany Stratton and Naomi in a triple threat while the Kabuki Warriors put the women's tag team titles on the line against Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill.
